Casa de Burgos, Madrid, Spain
An interdisciplinary project centered around the screening of the Quay Brothers’ new film The Hourglass Sanatorium, based on the prose of Bruno Schulz. The Madrid screening on June 29 of this new full-length production by the cult American filmmakers will serve as an opportunity to organize a series of accompanying events, including a concert featuring music from the album The Hourglass Sanatorium by the Polish group Bester Quartet, with special guest Grażyna Auguścik.
Bester Quartet is the contemporary incarnation of the legendary The Cracow Klezmer Band, founded in 1997 in Kraków by composer and accordionist Jarosław Bester. Their phenomenal arrangements of John Zorn’s themes—composed as a cycle in memory of Bruno Schulz—perfectly complement the mysterious world of sensual, literary fantasies crafted by the brilliant writer from Drohobych. This musical tribute is filled with sonic visions suspended between dream and reality, clearly referencing Schulz’s monumental literary work.
