"Grande Donna Freiheit & Her Spiders from the Squat" by SIKSA at Spring Festival Utrecht, Netherlands

SIKSA (a Yiddish word, colloquially and pejoratively used to describe a young girl perceived as vulgar, inexperienced, and immature) is a feminist duo composed for voice, bass, text, and bodies. SIKSA's performances blend the raw energy of punk concerts with elements of performance poetry and contemporary dance, acquiring unique dramatic qualities through their interaction with the audience. Within the limitations of their minimalist instrumentation and stage presence, the duo finds strength to forge their own path. Their work sometimes draws on childhood memories, fairy tales, legends, or a reality filtered through SIKSA's unrestrained and unapologetic perspective. The personal collides with the political, the unspoken with the screamed.

SIKSA has played over 400 concerts across Europe, Turkey, and the Caucasus—from small clubs and squats to contemporary art galleries and major European festivals.

On a world map broken by forces beyond our control, there are fewer and fewer places left to inspire each other through our shared absurdity. Closures, terminated lease agreements, rent hikes, struggling small clubs, no insurance, no money for therapy. To destroy what’s left of useless and unmarketable madness, Grande Donna Freiheit is accused of manipulation and inciting people to do things that are unnecessary, stupid, primitive, and naïve. A shadow of delegalization and guilt looms over her small yet mighty band, Grande Donna Freiheit & Her Spiders from the Squat. What to do in this fucked-up situation? Maybe just remember that deep down, we’re all spiders—and all it takes is to get the band back together. And of course, re-record the tape on which they were at their most stupidly cruel, which made them the most rebel & together.
