Screening of "Sanatorium Under The Sign Of The Hour Glass” by the Quay Brothers and a movie music concert in Lisboa

An interdisciplinary project centered around the screening of the new film by the Quay Brothers, Sanatorium Under the Hourglass, based on the prose of Bruno Schulz. The film, co-produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2024. The Lisbon screening of this new full-length production by the iconic American filmmakers will be an opportunity to host a series of accompanying events, including a concert featuring music from the album Sanatorium Under the Hourglass by the Polish ensemble Bester Quartet, with special guest Grażyna Auguścik.

Bester Quartet is the contemporary incarnation of the legendary The Cracow Klezmer Band, founded in 1997 in Kraków by Jarosław Bester – composer and accordionist. Their phenomenal arrangements of themes by John Zorn, forming a cycle dedicated to the memory of Bruno Schulz, perfectly complement the mysterious world of sensual and literary fantasies crafted by the genius writer from Drohobych. This musical tribute is filled with sonic visions suspended between dream and reality, unmistakably echoing the spirit of Schulz's literary masterpieces.

The concert will take place at the historic Cinema São Jorge in central Lisbon, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025.
